Story Club Minneapolis

  • Bryant Lake Bowl 810 W Lake St Minneapolis United States (map)

Story Club Minneapolis is a live monthly storytelling show that USUALLY happens at the Bryant-Lake Bowl, and features both an open mic segment and a curated set of performers from all over the Twin Cities arts scene. Story Club showcases true, autobiographical stories -- especially stories that are bold, vulnerable, unexpected, and connected to the complexity of our cultural environment. No two Story Club evenings are ever alike, but each month when we wrap up the show, we feel like we’ve witnessed a new, unique little community coming together.

In the wake of the Coronavirus, Story Club Minneapolis is turning our shows into online streaming productions via Zoom.us. Because of this, we’re swapping our our open mic for curated storytellers, which means that, while there won’t be names pulled from a hat, there WILL be SIX phenomenal narrative artists from all across North America, coming together in one special evening. We think that’s a bright spot in an otherwise trying time.

Story Club’s host and producer is actor/writer/storyteller Amy Salloway! She’s the creator of the award-winning autobiographical touring solo plays Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?, So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!, and Circumference, as well as the two-person show Entwined. She’s contributed true personal stories to programs on MPR and CBC radio, and has been both a storyteller and story coach for the hit national podcast RISK! Amy teaches memoir and creative writing classes through

Minneapolis Community Education, and storytelling workshops for regular people and corporations through The Story Studio. Find out more at Amy’s Facebook page Awkward Moment Productions.

August’s featured performers are Emily Mills, David Hu, Sandi Marx, Alex Eddington, Carolyn Thornlow, and Ken Green!

Emily Mills is writer, musician, roller derby skater, and general gadabout who has dipped in and out of small storytelling events for years but never really committed until recently (thanks, Story Studio!). The child of a minister and a school teacher, she’s never had much fear of speaking in public--whether people liked it or not. Emily also plays drums and sings in the punk duo Damsel Trash, and is a sometimes drag king performer, emcee, and producer. She lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her two partners and two doggos.

David Hu is a Bronx-bred storyteller now based in Brooklyn. Over the years David has told stories at The Moth, Story District and on the Risk! podcast.

Ken Green has been a reporter, (bad) slam poet, playwright and storyteller. He’s been a MassMouth Big Mouth Off Finalist, a Moth regional grand slam finalist and appeared on the nationally televised PBS storytelling show Stories from the Stage. He is one of the co-hosts and co-producers of Story Club Boston, part of the Story Club national network. After living most of his life in Chicago, he now resides in Boston and is a big Sox fan. (White Sox).

Sandi Marx, a seven-time Moth slam champ, has been busy telling stories for the past five years. She’s been featured on podcasts such as Risk!, The Story Collider, HotMic with Dan Savage and countless others. Sandi has also been a part of comedy festivals like The Women’s Comedy Festival in Boston, Cinderblock, She Makes Me Laugh and more. She’s the co-host of Taboo Tales and Mistakes Were Made, and has hosted Women of Letters. Last spring her one woman play, “The Shit Show” sold out at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater.  Sandi’s documentary, “The Fabulist,” was most recently streamed at several film festivals including Cannes. A mother of three grown kids, Sandi and her husband, live in Brooklyn, NY with their beloved cat, Tonya Harding.

Carolyn Thornlow is a New York-based consultant who has published a professional book and articles in Forbes and The New York Law Journal. Realizing that all these words, without personal story, are boring, she turned to storytelling. She’s told at Talk Therapy, Friday Night Stories, Prose of Pie and The Re-open Storytelling Show. Her name has never been pulled at The Moth.

Alex Eddington, of Toronto, has performed six original plays on the Fringe Festival circuit, combining such disparate elements as storytelling, live music, dance, puppetry and actual bird-watching. A frequent sound designer and composer for theatre and dance, Alex has worked on productions at Guild Festival Theatre, Tarragon Theatre, Thought for Food, and many touring Fringe shows. As an award-winning composer of concert music, he’s worked collaboratively with youth and community musicians as well as being commissioned by professional ensembles like the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He’s currently working on an album of vocal music with soprano Kristin Mueller-Heaslip to be released this fall. Find out more and peruse/purchase music at www.AlexEddington.com
