Annie Enneking (Annie and the Bang Bang) and Rob Shapiro (Populuxe) are songwriters and old friends who first played their music for each other in a cluttered book-and-ashtray-strewn Minneapolis bedroom back in '86, and, despite their lives taking many different turns in the intervening years, they've continued to keep close tabs on each other.
Open 24 Hours is their third joint performance. Annie's work in theater is well known; her music, however, has been just as breathlessly received for it's intimacy, emotional daring, and deft writing that calls to mind a cross between Joni at her most spell-binding and Tom Waits' exposed nerve sound. Rob has been called "an American Ray Davies," and his records sound like "the Gershwin brothers writing for the New York Dolls, or the Replacements playing Steely Dan," with songs that deal in the small details of life complete with punchlines that aren't always funny.
The connective thread between the two is restlessness, a refusal to be pigeonholed, and a fierce determination to push forward. Open 24 Hours is a point on that path, two friends stopping somewhere unknown for gas, bad coffee, and to clean the windshield.
