Finding Light in Dark Times

  • Bryant Lake Bowl 810 W Lake St Minneapolis United States (map)

As humans, we feel the grief of the earth as ice caps melt and fires rage. We feel the grief of humanity as they scramble to higher ground, hide from or face the oppressor's rod, and flee their homes for a promise of "better than this". We feel our own grief of loss to illness, isolation, and the collapse of the things we were so certain of.

In this dark time of deep winter, the darkness of the end of times feels closer still.

What did our ancestors do to keep pressing on in their own dark and uncertain times? What myths and stories did they tell to keep children from despair?

How did they keep their own light burning when all seemed lost?

This performance seeks to answer some of these questions and ritualize the finding of the light and joy that must balance out the darkness and grief.

We ask you to think about both what threatens to put your own light out and what feeds your light. Through song, movement, and ceremony we will come together to defend and protect one another's light. Join us!

Kari Tauring carries the staff of culture in her family of origin and broader community. Performing the stories, songs, and poetry of Nordic heritage is ritual in her life. A Nordic root performer, teacher, and spiritual leader who travels widely is called völva in Old Norse, staff carrier. Völva Stav is Ms Tauring's original Norse spiritual system. It is an embodiment approach to the world tree and the mythic characters that inhabit our bodies as the tree.

Ms Kari is well known in Minneapolis for her Winter Solstice ritual performances starting 1999 when her two sons were 2 and 4 years old! These ritual shows have marked Jul at the Bryant Lake Bowl Theater for the last several years. Joining her this Jul is Sweet LillyBee. The two share deep Nordic roots in runes, mythos, and the embodiment of Norse cosmology.

The artist most prominently known as Sweet LillyBee, has been based in Minneapolis since 1993. They create art in many mediums, but since the summer of 2005 their main focus has been performing, with a focus on burlesque, fetish, fire arts, alternative theatre and ritual, adding drag to the mix in 2012. They have toured North America for more than a decade, performing on grand stages, community events, back allies, and dive bars in earnest ever since.
